Marc Knowles (b. Ottawa, 1982) is a Montreal based painter. He completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Concordia University in 2008 and a Masters of Fine Arts at NSCAD University in 2016.
In my paintings, I depict a parallel world that combines the aesthetics of 1970’s/ 1980’s science-fiction imagery with abstract illusionism. During my childhood, I was in awe with these realist fantastical paintings. This specific aesthetic resonates in the colours, shapes and compositions of my paintings. Integrating this style within the context of contemporary abstract painting indicates the early era of my generation, a fusion that reveals how the past affects the present.
Since finishing my Masters in Fine Arts at NSCAD University in the spring of 2016, I’ve continued to personalise J.G Ballard’s notion of inner-space in relation to my work. Similarly to the fantasy writer, I am fascinated by the idea of sharing and exteriorizing an internal reality and how it reveals the external equivalents of the inner worlds of the psyche.
In my present practice, poured paint formations contrast with hard-edge pyramidal structures, a space where rigidity is complemented with fluidity. My compositions are in a seemingly psychedelic play somewhere in-between a desire for natural organic and architectural forms.
